What is Biopsychology?
In your own words, describe biopsychology and its theoretical framework. Why is biopsychology concerned most fundamentally with the neurological/physiological basis of normal behavior, with the study of abnormal behavior (the various disorders) a secondary concern?
Biopsychology is the scientific study of the biology of behavior. Biopsychology suggest that perceptions, emotions, thoughts, and memories might be produced by brain activity. Biopsychology is also known as the following; psychobiology, behavior biology, or behavioral neuroscience. Biopsychology is new and due to that doesn’t have a long, difficult history. Biopsychology is broad and diverse, studies many different wonders, and approaches research in many different ways. Biopsychology has current research because it is new and doesn’t have the complex past history and draws knowledge from other areas of expertise; Neuroanatomy, Neurochemistry, Neuroendocrinology, Neuropharmacology, and Neurophysiology. Biopsychology research can involve either human or nonhuman subjects, formal experiments or non-experimental studies, and can be either pure or applied. There are six major divisions of biopsychology; Physiological psychology, Psychopharmacology, Neuropsychology, Psychophysiology, Cognitive Neuroscience, and Comparative psychology. All of the six major divisions overlap. Biologically speaking the human brain is amazing and a dysfunction in the brain could be the cause of many different mental disorders.

According to Pinel, J. P. J. (2011), “Biopsychology is the scientific study of the biology of behavior.” Biopsychology does not have a long history because it did not develop into neuroscientific until the 20th century. People focused a lot on the psychological approach to the study of biology, rather than the biological approach of the study of psychology, which is why it took biopsychology more time to get more recognition. Biopyschology focuses on particular things such as, perceptions, emotions, thoughts, and memories, which are developed through the brain activity. As the years go by, biopyschology is gaining more and more research such as, Neuroanatomy, Neurochemistry, Neuroendocrinolgy, Neuropathology, Neuropharmacology, and Neurophysiology. Biopsychology has six major divisions, physiological psychology, psychopharmacolgy, neuropsychology, psychophysiology, cognitive neuroscience, and comparative psychology. All division overlap, which allows biopsychologist to use more than one approach, when it comes to their research. Biopsychologist are taking the time to research more of the brain activity and seeing what triggers the human behavior, both normal and abnormal behavior.
Pinel, J. P. J. (2011). Biopsychology (8th ed.). Boston, MA: Pearson.
Biopsychology is the study of human behavior and how it relates to the brain. In other words the reason we act the way we do is because of the chemical balances and the transmitters in our brain. Every response we have to situations that happen to us is a direct result of the way our brains see and process what has happened. Biopsychology is most concerned with basic normal behavior because this behavior takes place in the brain and when things such as memory or walking straight are not “normal” this could be an indicator of something gone wrong inside the brain, such as neurotransmitters not firing correctly. Basic thinking and reactions take place in the brain, between neurotransmitters and in the nervous system. All of these things work together to create our behavior. When just one of these systems is off our behavior can be off neurotransmitters misfire is thought to be the reason for illness such as OCD and depression, so you can see how important it is for these things to work correctly.
Biopsychology is a part of a branch of neuroscience which studies the nervous system and how it effects human behavior. In this field areas like memory and perception as well as emotion and learning habits are studied. It focus on the activity in the brain. Biopsychology is a fairly new discipline of study where animals and humans are used in conducting experiments.
Biopsychology is concerned most fundamentally with the neurological/physiological basis of normal behavior because it can lead to finding ways to help people with problems like brain damage and new discoveries in this field of study could benefit people who have been diagnosed with neuropsychological disorders such as Jimmie G. who suffered from a neuropsychological disorder called Korsakoff’s syndrome. Korsakoff’s syndrome is a type of memory loss where scientists and psychologists have linked its cause to a person being deficient in vitamin B1, which is a deficiency in thiamine. When conducting experiments in biopsychology, there are a variety of variables and types of studies that can be used.
The basics of psychology rely on many different theories, where the study of biopsychology makes it actually possible to see the interaction among mind and body by being assessable and noticeable. Biopsychology is a study that focuses primarily on the brain and the central nervous system to clarify behaviors, moods, perceptions and thoughts. Moreover, biopsychology uses biology and psychology to explain the influence that the mind has on the body and the body has on the mind. Therefore, the way we think influences our behavior and the way we feel and conversely, our physical well-being affects the way we think and behave. In addition, biopsychology also explains the interplay of genes, personal experiences and personal principals that conduct to a person’s behavior.
For instance, emotions can cause physiological responses such as the increase of the blood pressure during stressful situations (like the final tests do to me in college). Being aware of this, I can definitely take some actions prior by developing positive thoughts and reduce my over all nervousness.
Biopsychology is a form of study that is use scientifically. That is helpful when concerning the brain, behaviors, emotions, medical treatments and so on. Basically, looking into different diagnostic by conducting research and by doing so which ever findings/results that is given. Researchers are like investigators they take a lot of time and apply pride within their studies. Biopsychology is highly concerned with neurological/physiology basis because some abnormal behaviors need immediately medical attention. The reasons why there is a concern because the brain is a major part that keeps a person together emotionally, mentally, and physically. The brain has to process different things so that we could function on a everyday bases. However, comparing abnormal behavior to normal behavior is only a part of the neurological There. Some behavior disorders occur later on in life. Such as dementia, major depression disorder, delusional and so much more. Although, some of these disorders can also come at early age as well there has been some type of medication to help individual’s that suffer with these conditions. I’m glad that biopsychology exist didn’t know much about this form of psychology until now therefore, I’m mindful of all concepts that this course have to offer.
